Week 1, '06 League

by Dennis Lantz
5/3/2006

We showed up early, ready to throw. Any concerns about starting a seventh year of the Tyoga Atlatl Association’s league were momentarily assuaged as week one gave us a new format. Some of our regular members were unable to make it due to work schedules, but those who ventured out had fun.

We threw at the EMC Club along Route 34 in Waverly and it is likely that this will remain our designated spot throughout the year. In an attempt to rekindle the spirit of years past, we played some different games and it was a success.

To warm up, we threw a quick game of Atlatl Skins, as shown on the Atlatl Games section of this website. We chose an order, which was Jack, me, Missy, Reg and Mike. Mike is a new thrower and it was his first actual day throwing in a competition. He visited us for Earthday and purchased equipment from Jack. (It is always good to start out with good equipment).

The idea for the game is that everyone has to equal or better the score of the person before them. If they do not, they lose one of their “skins”. Each thrower starts out with three.

The game came down to Jack and me and I managed to edge him out for the victory. This was just a warm up game and I mention it only because it is the first time that it has ever been thrown (to my knowledge) and it went remarkably well.

We then threw two ISAC style games. In the second game, Angelo joined us.

Scores for the ISAC-style games were:

Game 1: Melissa Dildine - 86; Jack Rowe - 85X; Dennis Lantz - 85; Reg Tully - 71; Mike Blakeman - 6

Game 2: Dennis Lantz - 90; Melissa Dildine - 89XX (nice game Missy); Jack Rowe - 75XX; Reg Tully - 65; Angelo Mazzarese - 36 and Mike Blakeman - 14.

We then threw a modified version of Bulls-eye Baseball .

From approximately 10 meters, we each threw a single dart at the 10 ring of an ISAC target. Those who hit a 10 or better (X) threw a single dart at the 6-ring. A point was awarded if they hit that ring. In the second round, the first part was repeated and everyone who hit the 10-ring (or better) threw a single dart at the 7-ring. There were five rounds in each portion of the game (ten total) and each ring of the target was used (6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or better). The highest possible score would have been a 10.

After a slow start, I seemed to catch the magic and ended with 7 points. Jack and Missy tied for second place with 2 points. Although others hit the 10-ring, they were unable to capitalize and get points.

This was also the first time that this game has been played (to my knowledge) and it went well.

Week two will be held next Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the EMC Club. Everyone is welcome to join us.
