Week 14, August 15:
You couldn’t have asked for a more perfect night to throw darts. Warm sunshine offset by a cool breeze that rippled through the woods.
Like last week we threw two ISAC-style games and an animal round… and like last week, we had to split up into two groups after the first game because there were just too many people to throw together.
An interesting moment happened in between games as I went twenty or thirty yards away from the group to find a pine tree to… well, let’s just say I had a full bladder and I needed to empty it. As I was standing beside that particular pine tree, a yearling doe walked down the path less than thirty feet from me. She was watching the group, another twenty yards away, and as she did she was cropping the top leaves off some saplings, curiously unconcerned for the racket that came from the group.
I was snapping my fingers behind the tree trying to get them to look over (I was done by then, of course). I was moving and snapping my fingers and she didn’t even care. When I finally got the attention of the group, they all watched as she walked down around them toward the little pond. She didn’t run. She didn’t even seem nervous. At one point she actually went very near to them… probably within ten yards… and it looked to me that she was going to walk right up to them. It reminded me of some deer in the parks or game farms. There were at least three hunters in our group and I admit that the thought crossed my mind that – had atlatls been legal hunting weapons and it been season – I could not have asked for a better throwing opportunity. But she was beautiful and I am just as happy to have watched her.
Anyway, the scores for the games are as follows:
Game 1: Dennis Lantz – 88X; Jack Rowe – 83X; Melissa Dildine – 77; Tom Goble – 64; Reg Tully – 58 and Missy LaDue – 49.
Game 2 (combined scores for two groups): Dennis Lantz – 92XXX; Jack Rowe – 88X; Dave Santos – 77X; Melissa Dildine – 76; Tom Goble – 74; Reg Tully – 72; Shannon Santos – 50 and Missy LaDue – 15.
Animal Round: Dave Santos – 28; Dennis Lantz – 23; Jack Rowe – 20; Melissa Dildine – 11; Reg Tully – 11; Tom Goble – 9; Shannon Santos – 3 and Missy LaDue – 3.
On the night, the group threw the following at each target:
Turkey: 4 vital, 4 body and 8 misses.
Bear: 0 vital, 4 body and 12 misses.
Bobcat: 0 vital, 5 body and 11 misses.
Pig: 1 vital, 3 body and 12 misses.
Deer: 4 vital, 5 body and 7 misses.
Week 15 of the TAA league will be held next Tuesday, August 22. All are welcome.
